By analyzing feline DNA, researchers have gained major insights into the evolution of cats by showing how they migrated to new continents and developed new species.
The common domestic cat blood types are A and B, and a third rare type "AB". A DNA test is available to determine a cat's blood type. Blood typing is necessary to avoid problems of incompatibility both in mating of sire to dam, or if there is a need for a transfusion.

In 2004, the UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Lab first developed a genetic test for PKD1 in Persian cats. A simple cheek swab test can easily and inexpensively test for the PKD1 gene at any age.
Cat breeders can be confused about the subject of DNA testing for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM). As of February 2023, several different DNA tests for HCM in cats are available: one for Maine Coons, one for Ragdolls, and one for Sphynx. These tests are breed specific, therefore can not be used to detect genetic HCM in other breeds of cats.
There is a simple DNA test available to determine if a cat has the PK Deficiency gene. This article explains in detail how after testing, a carefully planned program can be implemented to eliminate the PK Deficiency gene from all breeding cats within just a generation or two.
