Tortoiseshell Female
In the 2001-2002 show season, CFA began awarding a new title – Breed Winner, which is abbreviated as BW. This title is quite exclusive, being given to ONLY ONE cat in each breed or division in a given year – the highest scoring cat for that breed or division in the Championship class.
Although the award began in that season, CFA is retroactively adding the title to Breed Winners of previous years.
In the 2016-17 show season, the award areas were expanded, to provide 3 sets of awards – BWR (for all cats competing in regions 1-9), BWC (for cats competing in China), and BWI (for cats competing in all other International areas).
In this article, Best of Breed was researched back to the 1966-67 show season where the best of breed cats were first listed in the CFA yearbooks.
Although CFA may not have yet updated their records to add the BW title to the cats listed below, the cats have earned the right to use the BW title.
Up until the 1989-90 show season, both the parti-colors and the bi-color/calicos (ie, “with white” cats) were shown in a single division – called the Parti Color Division.
Starting with the 1990-91 show season, the 2 groups were separated, with the “with white” cats being shown as the Bicolor/Calico division, leaving the Parti Color division to contain only the tortoiseshells, blue-creams, chocolate torties, and lilac-creams.
The first year a Parti-Color qualified for the award was the 1966-67 show season, and these cats are listed below. Although CFA may not have yet updated their records to add the BW title to the cats listed below, the cats have earned the right to use the BW title.
For the Parti-Colors, the first Breed Winner was GC, BW Mar-Geo Princess of Rangemore, a blue-cream female, who earned the award in 1966-67. The first male Breed Winner occurred in 1980-81, earned by a cream and white named GC, BW, NW Lee’s Let The Sunshine In – who is one of only 3 male breed winners for the division, pre-dating the split of the bicolors.
