Jennifer Cullings, Artist

A native of Ithaca, New York, Jennifer Cullings and her family moved to the Toutle, Washington area in 2002. Leaving the bustling city for life off the grid in the foothills of Mount St. Helens, was never in her plans. However, she now enjoys working as a full time artist in their peaceful wooded setting.

Jennifer received a Fine Arts degree from SUNY Oswego, NY, where she focused on graphic design in her studies. This created the foundation for her illustrative artwork style.

In 2003, she and her husband Todd created RedZoneGraphics.com to showcase their Mount St. Helens inspired line of artwork.

Jennifer is an active artist, participating in many Southwest Washington Art shows and events, where she is known for her soulful animal paintings.

Early in 2013, Jennifer discovered the world of pedigreed cat shows, and she is now a regular vendor at the CFA Northwest region shows. Her booth is filled with samples of her latest commissioned work, along with prints and cards from her own line of original artwork.

Jennifer enjoys painting all types of animals and wildlife, but especially cats and dogs. She strives to capture each animal’s spirit and attitude in her painting. Her preferred medium to work in is watercolor pencil, along with watercolor washes. Using many layers of watercolor pencil to both draw and paint with, she is able to create life like textures, along with fine details, allowing her to better express and highlight her art subjects. Below is a slideshow of images, showing one of her works while in progress, with the many layers used to create a finished portrait:

Jennifer creates pet portraits, general portraits, and illustrations by commission from your photographs. Whether your favorite photo was professionally taken, or a casual home shot of a special moment, as long as it is a clear photo, Jennifer can paint it for you. She will even include a set of note cards with your image along with your portrait.

In addition to single subject portraits, Jennifer can also combine multiple images into a single piece of artwork. When our Associate Editor, Kathy Durdick, was unable to decide on a single cat to have a portrait created for, her husband came up with the idea of doing several of their favorites in a combined image. Jennifer was up for the challenge, so they chose 7 of their favorite cats from Ristokat Cattery, ranging in time from 1995 through 2002. Jennifer combined those photos into a single piece of stunning artwork.
