The Himalayan began as an experiment in the 1930s, crossing Siamese and Persian cats to try to understand the inheritance of the pointed gene.
After several years, the program was successful in producing the first Himalayan kitten. It wasn’t until the 1950s, however, that breeders began to work to seriously developing the breed.
CFA first recognized the Himalayans in 1957 – only in the original 4 Siamese colors of seal point, blue point, chocolate point, and lilac point. Over the next decades, other colors were gradually accepted.
In 1966, the first grand was accomplished, with a blue point male named GC Chestermere Kinuba of Nevah-Tep. A few years later, the first National Win was achieved, with GC, BW, NW Lord Byron earning 9th Best Cat in 1973.
