Cats Rule The Internet

All across the world, at this very moment, camera lenses are trained on the family feline as owners snap their cat’s picture or videotape their kitty’s antics. Within moments of finishing the photo session, those same people are uploading those photos and tapes onto the internet… because, as all feline lovers know… CATS RULE THE INTERNET!

Yes, indeed. Whether you love cats, hate cats or are cat “neutral”, in our wired world, everyone has been exposed to emails with attachments featuring silly photos or videos of cats. Although we do adore the furry beasts, cats have become internet objects of humor, giggles and sometimes derision… Of course, it was not always so. In ancient Egypt, cats were worshiped as gods. In fact, in those times of long ago, when the household cat died, its owner would shave off his eyebrows as a mark of respect. The cat’s body would then be mummified and preserved for eternity.

Hmmmm…. maybe that seems a bit extreme from a modern perspective.

While we undeniably still worship our kitties, the web has also presented us with the opportunity to laugh at, make fun of, and outright mock the foibles of our favorite pet. So many of the links we send one another in emails feature our feline friends in various activities – many of them slightly humiliating – and without fail, they make us laugh, and giggle, and then forward it on to the next person in our contact list. The ancient Egyptians would be horrified at the lack of respect.

So… let’s take a stroll through some of the best websites to browse when searching for a laugh at our fur-babies’ expense…

Social Media

Undeniably, the premium conduit for video-kitty madness is You will find a lot that might tickle your fancy. On YouTube, you will find videos of cats enjoying a ride on robot-vacuums, cats beating up on printers, cats versus dogs, cats versus cats, even cats versus their own image in a mirror. Giggle at kittens sleeping, kittens playing, kittens meowing, kittens getting a bath. Watch cats chasing ping pong balls, laser lights or bugs on the wall. And of course, there is a virtual universe of videos on YouTube showing cats simply being cats – silly, clumsy, curious, sweet, or just plain losing their dignity.

I Can Haz Cheezburger

For lots of pun fun on the internet, visit I Can Haz Cheezburger.

This website offers insight into the mind of our four-legged friends by adding user-generated captions to cat images. The caption most often reflects the words or thoughts of the kitty in the picture. Even funnier, these captions are written in the web abbreviations of LOL speak. Treasures from this website are often sent in emails, shared amongst cat lovers and haters alike.

Cats In Sinks

There are few things as smile-inducing as the look on a cat’s face when it chooses a sink as a napping spot. Check out the website dedicated to this odd choice of bed called Cats In Sinks. Clearly, sleeping in the bathroom sink could be a sport in the next Feline Olympics if the pics on this website are evidence of the average cat’s penchant to lounge in a ceramic basin.

Cats That Look Like Hitler

If ever you doubt that cats rule the internet, you will change your mind once you realize that there is an entire website devoted Cats That Look Like Hitler. This website begins with the question, Does your cat look like Adolf Hitler? Do you wake up in a cold sweat every night wondering if he’s going to up and invade Poland? Does he keep putting his right paw in the air while making a noise that sounds suspiciously like “Sieg Miaow”? If so, this is the website for you. If your kitten has the unfortunate luck to be born with a marking under its nose similar to the facial hair of that infamous dictator, it can be showcased on a website devoted to other kitties with the same look!

And So Much More

This is just a taste of a few unusual websites devoted to the foibles of the average feline. There are a million others. While we humans enjoy trawling the internet laughing at cats, I suspect the felines are laughing at us. Why are we mesmerized by our kitty-companions antics? And obsessed with sharing their images with the world wide web? It really is hard to say. But it is obvious that cats rule the Internet. One day we may reach the point of complete feline saturation. But until that day, don’t shave your eyebrows for anyone.
